C2E2, commissions AT C2E2, and new art...
Heading to the big Chicago Comic Con to schmooze, sell and dip my toe into the midwestern 'con scene!
This weekend, April 26th-28th, I’ll be heading to McCormick Place and making my Artist Alley debut at C2E2, the big Chicago comic con. Actually, it’s my first ever visit to C2E2. I’m relatively new to the area, and decided to jump head first into the Midwestern ‘con world!
If you’re heading to C2E2, stop by and say Hi! I’ll be at booth Z-6 in Artists Alley, and have been busting my arse putting the booth together and coming up with ideas and promotions to make this event worthwhile for everybody. Lots of fun stuff happening. Here’s what I’ll be peddling:
Beginning Friday AM, I’ll be offering custom caricature commissions on the spot, and virtually!!. Drawings will be offered as BW or color, with open ended options for special requests! Want yourself drawn with Alfred E. Neuman? Sure! You and a Wookie? Done! Your mom with the cast of Schitt’s Creek? Why not!
Here’s an example of what I’ll be drawing at this thing-
I’m really looking forward that part of things. I’m never happier than when I’m drawing, so bring it on!
In addition to drawing on the spot, I’m also going to be offering the same commissions virtually through my website for the same time span as the convention. That way if you can’t make it to C2E2, you can still get the same product I’ll be doing live, for the same price (plus shipping), and it’ll be delivered to your door, ASAP!

Further more, I’m fully stocked with my books, ready to be signed and drawn in. I’ll also have a decent supply of Mad magazines I make appearances in for sale.
How’s that for 'something for everybody’!
Speaking of commissions, here’s a fun short & sweet job I had over the weekend
A client I’ve done a lot of work for contacted me for something a little different. This was a personal commission, not for some company or organization, which is unusual for me. To boot, it was a caricature of his friend’s dogs, something even MORE unusual for me!
Far be it to me to turn down a paying job, and I really like this client, so I agreed to do it.
The usual process is, I have the client email photos of whoever’s getting drawn, with as many angles & expressions as possible. Here’s what I was sent:
That’s what I got. This was a surprise gift, so the pics were few and far between (not to mention low resolution!). Whatever, it’s doable. (Thanks to Google Image Search, I could figure out what kind of dog that big one is, and fine better references, so I could more accurately depict what’s going on with that dog’s anatomy!)
Then I was given a little info on what he was looking for- in this case the funny things the dogs do, their interactions and all that, all good info to make it more personal. For example, that big BW dog is an attention stealer, and in the family, he reminds them of the Stuart character from MadTV from 30 years ago. (Fun fact: I never got into MadTV, other than the short lived interstitials before and after the commercials). One of the bits I HAD seen of the show was that Stuart character, who struck me as impossibly overrated. Just a grown man doing baby talk for laughs. I didn’t get it. Clearly I’m in the minority. But I digress…

For paid subscribers, I’m posting a rundown of my process for something like this coming later today… be on the lookout!
Correction: due to a Substack boo-boo, that one went out… NOW! Sorry if the out-of-context post ruined your day!
Thanks to you, Steckley ‘Stack Space Cadet! Your support makes this all possible! As I get more adept at this Substack business, there’ll be more and more fun bonus content- lucky you!
